Day by Day Itinerary


Altai Nomadic Games



Day 01 — Ulaanbaatar – Ölgii – Tavan Bogd Ranger Station (September 6)


Fly from Ulaanbaatar to Ölgii, the capital of Bayan-Ölgii Province.


Flights are NOT included in the tour. We can help you book your flights. See this guide for domestic flights.


Upon arrival, our team will meet you at Ölgii Airport. Enjoy brunch in Ölgii before beginning the scenic drive toward Altai Tavan Bogd National Park.


Continue toward the Tavan Bogd Ranger Station, passing through spectacular mountain and steppe landscapes. Upon arrival, settle into your traditional ger accommodation and enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the Altai Mountains.

Day 02 — Horse Riding to Tavan Bogd Base Camp – Potanin Glacier (September 7)

After breakfast, begin an unforgettable horse-riding journey toward the Tavan Bogd Base Camp. Ride through the spectacular mountain landscape toward the area of Potanin Glacier, surrounded by the magnificent snow-capped peaks of the Altai Tavan Bogd range.


Enjoy panoramic views of the glaciers and the five towering peaks before beginning the return journey on horseback. Ride back to the ranger station in the afternoon and enjoy a well-earned evening at camp.

Day 03 — Tavan Bogd – Shiveet Khairkhan – Khoton & Khurgan Lakes (September 8)

After breakfast, depart Tavan Bogd and drive toward the beautiful Khoton and Khurgan Lakesregion. En route, stop at Shiveet Khairkhan Mountain, an important archaeological site famous for its ancient Bronze Age rock art. Continue through the spectacular Altai landscape toward the lakes.


Upon arrival, you will be welcomed by a Kazakh nomadic family at their traditional camp. In the evening, experience a traditional Five Fingers feast, a special Kazakh communal meal and cultural experience shared with your hosts and the travel team.

Day 04 — Baga Turgen Waterfall – Ancient Turkic Heritage (September 9)

Today, explore the spectacular natural landscapes surrounding Khoton and Khurgan Lakes. Drive and hike toward Baga Turgen Waterfall, enjoying the surrounding mountains, valleys and rivers.


In the afternoon, continue exploring the historical heritage of the region around Khurgan Lake. Visit ancient burial mounds, balbals and Turkic stone figures, remnants of the civilizations that once inhabited the Altai region. Return to the nomadic family camp in the evening.

Day 05 — Khoton & Khurgan Lakes – Altai Village – Eagle Hunter Family (September 10)

Today, leave the Khoton and Khurgan Lakes region and travel toward Altai Village. Upon arrival, meet your host Kazakh eagle hunter and his family. You will be welcomed into their traditional nomadic home and introduced to the community participating in the Altai Nomadic Games & Eagle Festival.


Spend time getting acquainted with your horses and fellow eagle hunters while preparing for the festival. This is also an opportunity to experience the excitement and preparations behind one of Mongolia's most distinctive cultural celebrations.

Day 06 — Horseback Journey to the Altai Nomadic Games & Eagle Festival (September 11)

Today, ride on horseback alongside members of the Kazakh eagle-hunting community to the festival grounds. Experience the spectacular Altai Nomadic Games & Eagle Festival, celebrating the traditions, skills and cultural heritage of the Kazakh people of Western Mongolia. Enjoy traditional competitions and cultural activities while experiencing the festival alongside local eagle hunters.

After the festival, ride back to the family camp. Later, spend time with your eagle-hunting hosts and learn firsthand how golden eagles are tamed, trained, handled and fed.

Day 07 — Altai Nomadic Games – Ölgii – Cultural Evening & Farewell Dinner (September 12)

Return to the festival grounds for another day of the Altai Nomadic Games & Eagle Festival. Continue enjoying the traditional competitions and cultural performances before departing for Ölgii in the late afternoon. Upon arrival in Ölgii, check into your hotel and relax.

In the evening, enjoy a special cultural farewell program featuring:

• Mongolian throat singing

• Traditional Kazakh music and family performances

• Cultural entertainment

• A special farewell dinner

Celebrate the end of your Western Mongolia adventure with your local hosts and travel team.

Day 08 — Ölgii – Ulaanbaatar (September 13)

After breakfast, transfer to Ölgii Airport for your domestic flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Your unforgettable Western Mongolia and Altai Nomadic Games adventure comes to an end.

FAQs

I have not ridden horses before? Can I ride in Mongolia?

Yes. We select horses suitable for your riding experience. You don't need any prior riding experience. If you have never ridden before our horse wrangler will guide your horse as well. Many of our guests have never ridden horses before. They loved the experience of riding in the open steppes.


Are there any additional costs?

No, There are no extra costs. We cover everything in the itinerary including meals, transportation, entertainment fees.
